⚽ York up all night as England reach the quarter-finals

What a morning to be an England fan. The streets of York were full of three lions shirts at dawn today after Thomas Tuchel's side beat World Cup co-hosts Mexico 3-2 at the Estadio Azteca — overcoming a hostile crowd, altitude, a storm-delayed kick-off and a red card for Jarell Quansah. With 11 minutes of added time, the game didn't finish until after 4am UK time, but that didn't stop supporters packing city pubs through the night. One fan on Spurriergate called it the best England match he'd seen in his lifetime. England now face Norway — who knocked out Brazil 2-1 — in the quarter-final on Saturday, kick-off 10pm.

🎤 Police and council oppose more Museum Gardens gigs

Futuresound Events has applied for a licence to stage up to 12 additional days of live music a year in York Museum Gardens, on top of York Museums Trust's existing six-day licence — potentially 18 event days in total, with music until 11.30pm. North Yorkshire Police are recommending refusal, saying the application doesn't do enough to prevent crime, disorder and public nuisance, and the council's public protection officer agrees. Make It York backs the bid, pointing to the series' national profile and the income it generates for the Museums Trust. This week's Live at Museum Gardens shows are unaffected. The licensing hearing is on Monday 13 July.

🚧 Station Gateway bill hits £60m — decision day tomorrow

The estimated cost of the Station Gateway scheme has climbed to £60.1m, against an original budget of £26m, according to a council report going before the executive tomorrow (Tuesday 7 July). Unexpected works and delays added a further £5.4m in the past year, and an audit has previously found critical weaknesses in how the project has been managed since 2023. It comes after heavy rain left the brand-new Queen Street crossing partially underwater, with disability campaigner Flick Williams warning the flooded tactile paving was undetectable to blind pedestrians. The council says storm drains weren't yet connected to the wider system and the issue is being resolved.

🚔 Man, 75, arrested at York station

A 75-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of an upskirting offence at York railway station, in an incident reported to have taken place on a train. Enquiries are ongoing.

🏘️ Linton-on-Ouse row rumbles on

The proposed asylum accommodation centre at the former RAF Linton-on-Ouse base continues to divide opinion. Residents say the village is already being damaged by the plans, while Mayor of York and North Yorkshire David Skaith argues the site should be used to build housing for local people instead — a position that has put the Labour mayor at odds with Conservative councillors over the way forward.

🚌 Rougier Route bus trial also on tomorrow's agenda

It's a big day for York transport tomorrow: alongside the Station Gateway update, the executive will also consider updated proposals for the Rougier Route bus priority trial — the plan to give buses priority through Rougier Street, George Hudson Street and Micklegate. The council consulted residents on how the route should work earlier this year.

💔 Woman dies in A19 crash near Thirsk

A woman died in a head-on collision on the A19 near Great Thirkleby, police confirmed on Friday. A BMW travelling north and a Skoda Fabia travelling south collided at about 2.20pm on Wednesday, closing the road for several hours. The driver of the Skoda died at the scene; the BMW driver was taken to hospital. North Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage, quoting reference 12260123305.

Theatre Royal unveils new season — with Death of a Salesman revival

York Theatre Royal has announced its next season, headlined by a major new revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman — a first-ever co-production with Glasgow's Citizens Theatre, running 2–27 March 2027 before transferring to Glasgow. Also announced: a revival of Emma Rice's Tristan & Yseult (April 2027), the UK premiere of Acosta Danza's Cuban Baroque (1–3 October), and By Royal Appointment starring Jane Asher and Samantha Womack (10–14 November). Members' priority booking opens today at 1pm, with general sale on 11 July.
